Quote: "At least today we can bring some sophisticated dating techniques to the table. For most of the nineteenth century geologist could draw on nothing more than the most powerful guesswork."
Question: How could the people trust on this geologist if there was no way of checking if they were right?
How can we be sure that our guesses are correct?
Comment: How could people in the nineteenth century believe this geologist? It seems that back in those times and even these days, people believe anything they hear. Because how can we be sure that anything is correct. we assume, and then p[rove. but it would seem that in those times what most people did was assume and just believe. it very impressive the faith that people had in these men. and when I say men I mean people who went to school and studied what they assumed to be correct theory and practice.
